Junior Golf Coaching in Perth: What Parents Should Look For

The first job is to help the child want to come back
Junior golf development is not simply adult coaching with smaller clubs. Children have different attention spans, motivations, physical development and reasons for playing.
For most young golfers, the first measure of a successful session is simple: did they enjoy it enough to want to play again? Skill development matters, but long-term improvement is difficult if the child loses their connection with the game.
Look for age-appropriate communication
A junior coach should be able to simplify the task without talking down to the player. Younger golfers often respond well to targets, games and external challenges rather than detailed technical instruction.
As the player develops, the coaching can become more specific. The level of information should grow with the golfer.
Fundamentals matter, but perfection does not
Grip, setup, balance, strike and basic ball-flight understanding are useful foundations. But juniors also grow, change physically and experiment.
Trying to manufacture a technically perfect swing too early can remove athleticism and curiosity. I would rather give a junior strong foundations and the freedom to develop skill.
Confidence should come from evidence
Children quickly notice whether they are succeeding. Coaching can create achievable challenges so the player experiences progress and learns how effort, practice and decision making affect results.
That is different from simply telling a junior to “be confident”. Confidence is stronger when it is attached to skills they have built and situations they have handled.
Parents should understand the development plan
If a junior becomes more committed or competitive, parents should know what the coach is prioritising and why. Development may include technique, short game, playing skills, practice habits, tournament behaviour and eventually physical or performance support.
Progress is rarely linear, particularly while a child is growing. The plan should allow for that.
Junior golf coaching in Perth
My junior coaching philosophy combines golf development with mentoring. For committed young players, the Emerging Player Pathway provides a more structured environment, while individual lessons can suit juniors who need targeted coaching or are still discovering the game.
When choosing a junior golf coach in Perth, look beyond how technically impressive the session appears. Look at whether your child understands the task, enjoys learning and is gradually becoming a more capable and independent golfer.
